How we vet tutors

What a tutor goes through before you can book them, what you can see as a parent, where your money sits, and how to tell us when something is wrong.

Before a tutor can be booked

Every tutor on Tutorviq goes through the same steps, in this order.

  1. Step 1

    Application

The tutor tells us the subjects and levels they teach, their qualifications and their hourly rate.

  2. Step 2

    Qualification check

The tutor uploads their certificates, and our team checks them against what the tutor has told us.

  3. Step 3

    Demo lesson

The tutor records a short lesson on a topic they teach. Our team watches it and looks at how they explain, not just what they know.

  4. Step 4

    Identity, background and safeguarding

The tutor uploads the documents for their country, listed below, and our team checks each one.

  5. Step 5

    Review and approval

Only when all of this is done does the profile go live. The checks a tutor has passed are shown on their profile.

The documents we check

Different countries issue different documents, so the checks depend on where the tutor lives. Every tutor also completes a safeguarding course.

  • Tutors in the UK

Checked by our team before the profile goes live.

    • Photo IDA photo ID document, checked against the name on the tutor’s account.
    • Enhanced DBS checkThe certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  • Tutors in Nigeria

    • Government IDA government-issued photo ID, checked against the name on the tutor’s account.
    • Police Character CertificateIssued by the Nigeria Police Force.
  • Every tutor

    Wherever they live.

    • Safeguarding courseA certificate from a safeguarding course, so they know how to keep children safe and what to do if they are worried.

Money, Ene and your data

  • Your money is held until the lesson is taught

Your payment does not go to the tutor when you book. We hold it, through Stripe for payments in pounds or Paystack for payments in naira, and it goes to the tutor after the lesson has been taught and you have had the chance to report a problem. If a lesson does not go ahead, or you report one, our team reviews it and refunds you when it is owed.
  • Ene, the AI tutor

Ene answers homework questions and explains ideas step by step. Parents can read their child’s conversations with Ene. Longer Ene sessions use AI credits, so a child cannot spend more than the credits on the account.
  • Data and children under 13

We follow the UK GDPR, and Nigeria’s data protection rules for our Nigerian users. Children under 13 cannot create their own account; a parent or guardian adds them. To see or delete what we hold about you or your child, email privacy@tutorviq.com.
  • Our safeguarding policy

Read our safeguarding policy for the standards every tutor agrees to and how we respond to a concern.

Reporting a concern

If anything feels wrong, whether a tutor said something that bothered your child, a lesson did not go the way you expected, or an Ene answer was not right, email safeguarding@tutorviq.com with the lesson and what happened.
